Exploring Ink

I created these tattooed heads for ECCC 2015. They were simply supposed to be props to display VILE's Logo Beanies. However, they managed to garner such strong attention from the Con attendees, I decided to offer them up for sale.

Each one-of-a-kind design is hand drawn and required about seven hours of hatching with a Sharpie marker. The heads are hard moulded plastic and have a slight texture that helps hold the ink. They require some gentle care due to the fact that the plastic doesn't absorb the ink. Therefore, permanent will remain permanent assuming you don't rub the shit off. Keep them out of reach of your children.

If you are interested in purchasing either one of these custom pieces, you can find them in our Shop — Female headMale Head

China Kills: What difference can an illustrator make?

In the past fifty years, Africa has seen the elephant population decline by 90% due to the insatiable demand for illegal ivory. At the current rate of murder, elephants will be extinct in the wild within a decade ... due to vanity and greed. The elephant birth rate simply cannot outrun the bullets of poachers. There is no possible way to put words to the potential extinction of this magnificent creature. Humanity is 100% responsible for the life or death of elephants.

In an effort to do my part, I'm proud to introduce the first VILE Activism campaign.

China is the single biggest importer of illegal ivory. Ivory finds its way to consumers in the form of carved trinkets, piano keys, chopsticks, and jewelry, as well as in the form of "Traditional Chinese Medicine" where ivory powder is used to treat fevers, nosebleeds, convulsions, and stroke and is prescribed as an aphrodisiac.

Fucking. Chopsticks.

Even more heinous than the investors who stockpile tusks banking on the depletion of the species to raise the value of their cache, the illicit ivory trade also funds the activities of violent terrorist groups in the Middle East and around the world.

Whether or not the tide toward extinction for this magnificent creature can be stopped, we as a species have a moral imperative to make an effort to save the elephant. And getting ordinary people to give a damn about the plight of the elephant is the most critical first step. VILE Inc. will be creating apparel, stickers, and posters to help stop the trade in illegal ivory. The goal is not to start a new activist organization; there are many conservation, protection, and animal welfare organizations run by dedicated, passionate people who have already done the incredibly hard work of establishing infrastructures and ties to political power brokers. VILE Inc. will be supporting selected organizations fighting to save the elephant through visual awareness campaigns and financial donations.

In order to do all of this, the elephants need your support. Now.

Think of it this way: Do you really want your child or grandchild to grow up in a world without elephants? How will you feel when the only way to see an elephant in the wild is through a Google Image search or on YouTube?

So, how much of a difference can an illustrator make? Not much without your help. Order a t-shirt today and help us create a movement to save the wild elephant >> Then post a photo of yourself wearing this t-shirt on Instagram and Twitter with hashtags #ChinaKills and #LastDays.

FUNbags

A couple months ago, a good friend of VILE approached me about creating custom artwork for a charity cornhole (bean bag toss) tournament she was putting together to help benefit a breast cancer foundation.

I signed on immediately.

VILE is pleased to donate a set of custom-painted boards to support the inaugural FUNbags Charity Cornhole Tournament in Atlanta.

Nine other talented local artists will be contributing custom painted boards that will be auctioned off at the event. All proceeds from the sale of the boards will be donated to The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that gives low-income families help in their fight to overcome breast cancer.

Please come out and support the event.

Starting Over

A few months ago I had a friend say to me, "man, you've really had a long run of bad luck".

Looking back over the past two years, this sentiment is inarguable. Such is life. These experiences have caused me to grow stronger, more confident in my abilities, more resilient and more grateful than I've ever been.

Nonetheless, I can't help but feel everything that has happened in my recent life has been purposely pushing me down a different path. And I have come to the inescapable conclusion that it is time for me to wipe the slate clean and actualize another one of my dreams.

I'm leaving Atlanta. My home for the past nineteen years.

I'll be leaving behind family, best friends, and a lot of good people who have shaped my life and experience. People who will remain close to my heart for as long as I breath. This isn't to say, I won't be coming back to visit. Only that there will be a few miles in between.

As of April, 2014, I'll be bound for my new home...

Seattle.

(Figured if I am going to move, I may as well go big.)

I'm overwhelmed and excited for the promise that lies ahead.

I Really Want "It" To Work

The moment doubt creeps into your outlook, you will begin second-guessing every decision you make. You'll begin focusing on every single potential negative you can manufacture to support your fears

Quick Study: Hippo

When I sat down at my drawing table this morning, I had a single goal: To find out how quickly I could produce a viable illustration. All told, from concept sketch through the finished vector drawing, I spent about seven hours creating this character.

It's actually based on a friend of mine who runs a small web shop from the Isle of Wight called Made By Hippo. It just so happens that he's also a badass black belt in a couple Japanese swordsmanship martial arts. The character practically drew itself.

Helping Kickstart Better Half

One of our favorite local chefs, who has been running an intimate dinner-party-style restaurant out of his home with his wife for a number of years recently Kickstarted an effort to open a real restaurant. Due, in no small part, to their hard work, congenial natures, and amazing menus their effort was met with widespread, enthusiastic local support.

PushStart Kitchen will be moving out of their loft and we are anxiously awaiting the grand opening of their new restaurant Better Half.

I am thrilled to be a part of the campaign and have contributed a piece of art that will be on display for the life of the restaurant.

I wish Zach and Cristina best wishes for a very successful future and thank them for the opportunity to be a miniature part of their dream.

Support local small businesses, restaurants, and artists!

Illustrating VILE's Poster

The process for this illustration was all about production and time. Lots and lots of time. My drawing app of choice is Sketchbook Pro because it is the most "natural" drawing tool available when combined with a Wacom tablet or Cintiq. All of the line work for this piece was done using a stylus, a 9" Wacom tablet with the drawing area constrained and liberal use of Command-Z and my eraser.
